What questions should I ask the producer when I buy a freezer beef?
- How old is the animal?
Our family prefers meat from an animal under 30 months of age. - What has it been eating? How long?
We like grain finished beef on our table. We feed the cattle in our freezer beef program a balanced ration, including corn, for 90-120 days. Each animal is different. This gives enough fat to have good marbling, which provides the flavor we like, but not so much that there is fat needing to be trimmed off. - What is the sex of the animal?
We only put steers (castrated males) and heifers into our freezer beef program. No bulls.
